Last week I came over to London to do some business [to meet with dance music labels, distributors and magazines] and to check out the scene here. Coming from Vancouver it has been a shock to say the least! Its like Vancouver’s music scene but on steroids.
As soon as I landed at Gatwick I knew that something was different. Even at the airport I noticed that every shop there played house music over their loud system. In Vancouver it is extremely rare to hear dance music anywhere but in specific clubs on specific nights. Coffee shops, clothing stores, pubs, resteraunts, internet cafes, corner store and many other fine establishments were all playing songs that I recognized from being a Dj. Some of the songs I heard were:
On my first night in town I decided to check out Sneaky Soundsystem and Nic Fanciulli at Turnmills in Central London. Even though there were some hassles at the door I was in and had a blast. The club was huge! I got lost in it multiple times. I kept finding myself back in the hip-hop/pop room of all places. There were tons of people packed shoulder to shoulder. It was hard to move.
I have never been in a club with so many people and have never seen so many people going off to house music. People were freaking out everywhere!
So far I have been taken back by the size and strength of the scene over here and I look forward to getting into it more and more as the days go on! If you haven’t been to London and love dance music I highly recommend that you come over and check it out!
For the first time, Play It Tonight will be heading to Amsterdam to check out the Amsterdam Dance Event(ADE). The event takes place in the downtown core of Amsterdam from October 18th until the 20th.
The ADE has taken the place of the Winter Music Conference (WMC) Miami as the ‘go to’ dance music event for music industry business, djs, producers and for great music. Rumor has it that the ADE is a great mix of business and fun which is what the WMC used to be all about 5 years ago. Now South Beach is flooded with party kids from all around North America that go down to get fucked up and party. Thousands are there just because it is the place to be and because they have money and they are not there for the actual conference or for the business. It is the wrong crowd heading down south and less and less business gets done each year.
Navigating the streets, alleys, and water ways of Amsterdam can apparently be a nightmare. Aside from this we have not heard one negative thing about the event or the city itself.
The conference features many different business networking events and conferences along with performances at night from some of the biggest and best artists in the world including:
If anyone would like to meet the Play It Tonight staff at the ADE please feel free to click here and email us with your contact info and we will set up a meeting with you over a pint or some lunch.
