The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) 2007

August 14th, 2007 by Sean Gallagher

For the first time, Play It Tonight will be heading to Amsterdam to check out the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). The event takes place in the downtown core of Amsterdam from October 18th until the 20th.

ADE

The ADE has taken the place of the Winter Music Conference (WMC) Miami as the ‘go to’ dance music event for music industry business, djs, producers and for great music. Rumor has it that the ADE is a great mix of business and fun which is what the WMC used to be all about 5 years ago. Now South Beach is flooded with party kids from all around North America that go down to get fucked up and party. Thousands are there just because it is the place to be and because they have money and they are not there for the actual conference or for the business. It is the wrong crowd heading down south and less and less business gets done each year.

ADE

Navigating the streets, alleys, and water ways of Amsterdam can apparently be a nightmare. Aside from this we have not heard one negative thing about the event or the city itself.

The conference features many different business networking events and conferences along with performances at night from some of the biggest and best artists in the world including:

What is the world coming to?

Underworld front man Rick Smith was rushed to hospital in Athens, Greece after a local gang started a riot at the Ejekt Festival at the end of June.

dance music festival gone bad

30 men that claimed to be “anarchists”rushed the festival with tear gas, iron bars, baseball bats and masks. The thugs broke through security around the time that the Beastie Boys were set to preform.

The baseball stadium where the dance music festival was being staged had to be evacuated by police because people were being beaten, cars were set on fire and the stadium was being heavily destroyed.

As mentioned above, several people were injured including a number of security staff, volunteers, performers and attendees. Smith was kept in hospital for a number of days in Athens before returning home to England for further treatment.

Land of the falling sun?

Japan experiences difficulties with Physical Sales in The First Half of 2007.

Physical sales have sharply declined during the first half of 2007 in Japan. This downturn is a part of a world-wide drop in physical music sales that has been happening over the last 2 years.

Physical formats dropped 9 percent during the first half-year to 129.6 million units, according to the RIAJ - the Recordings Industry Association of Japan. What is interesting about this is that recent stats show that dance music specific sales have been growing in Japan despite the overall downturn of the physical aspect of the industry.

Digital asset sales have not yet been disclosed by the RIAJ but we look forward to seeing the results!

This is…

July 17th, 2007 by Sean Gallagher

Sander Kleinenberg, superstar DJ and head of Little Mountain Recordings has just announced that he is releasing a new mix CD. The new CD titled “This is…” will be comprised of Tech, Electro and Prog house and will no doubt prove to be rocking in typical Kleinenberg fashion. The mix album is due to come out in August 2007.

Sander Kleinenberg - This is...

The name “This is…” is a play on the highly successful song that he made for the WMC in 2006 called “This is Miami“. The song said the name of the city that the club was in and this made the crowd go so nuts that Sander then made the song for a lot of the cities that he would play in. “This is Toronto”, “This is London”, “This is Ibiza” and so on.

ISP’s now resposible for illegal file-sharing

July 9th, 2007 by Sean Gallagher

According to a recent court ruling, ISPs in Belgium are now being held responsible for any illegal file-sharing on their network.

The Brussels-based court of First Instance is demanding that Internet Service Providers in Belgium setup filtering technologies to prevent file sharing.

This ruling is currently only for USPs in Belgium but will shortly be enforced in other countries throughout the EU.

IFPI President John Kenedy said, “This is a decision that we hope will set the mold for government policy and for courts in other countries in Europe and around the world,” according to the Digital Music News on July 9th 2007.

If the filtering technology is not in place within six months (the rumored prescribed window), the court will charge a €2,500 ($3,404) daily fee against the internet service provider.

Is this the first step to the end of internet file-sharing? Or will this just be another useless step that internet users (music listeners and DJs) will find their way around?

Download Cards

July 3rd, 2007 by Sean Gallagher

For traditional retail stores around the world, prepaid cards are generating billions. All of the big players in the music industry are now starting to offer pre-paid download cards to increase gift giving and to increase exposure to new customers.

Itunes has reported that in December and January of this year they sold 8 times the amount of songs that they did the previous Christmas. Anyone looking at this statistic can only draw one conclusion behind the sudden increase in sales: prepaid gift cards for the Christmas season.

These cards can be increasingly profitable for companies because users usually do not use the full value allotted to the card as well as being an amazing promotional tool.

Play It Tonight will probably be making better use of pre-paid cards just as the big names in the industry already have. But is this really where the industry is heading? Are these cards really going to save the music industry? This may be appliccable for the mom that doesn’t know what to buy her son for Christmas and Itunes but are the buying habits of DJs really conducive for this type of a business model?
