Deep Linking

October 10th, 2007 by Dan

In this weeks feature focus we look at Deep Linking. Many of you have asked for the direct URL to link to a label, a release or an artist. Now you can do that! On every label, release and artist page there is a link in the left hand nav that reads “Link to this …” By clicking on it, the URL of that page will open up and you can cut and paste it into your email newsletter, your blog, your website, whatever you like.

Deep Linking

This is especially useful for artists who want to promote their latest release. It is useful for people who want to email their friends a page of great music. It’s useful for labels who want to promote their label page on Play It Tonight.

Enjoy this new feature!

Meet Dan and Sean

September 20th, 2007 by Sean Gallagher

This is a video blog of the two owners of Play It Tonight, Dan and Sean, doing what we do in the 10 hours a week when we’re not in the office.

Sean is doing the majority of the talking at the camera but there are shots of Dan talking on the phone & DJing and our financial guy Brent dancing at a party.

Let us know your thoughts or anything else that you would like to see us get on tape (More girls? Gigs? Office stuff? More of our friends and staff?)

Oh How I Love The Kick Drum

August 14th, 2007 by Dan

Kick Drum

No matter what song, no matter how many times, when that kick drum drops, people loose their mind. I love witnessing this over and over. The kick drum unites everyone. It is as ancient as music itself… some of the first music was banging on a drum.. in every culture, in every corner of the world, people dance to the drum. Thankfully we are pre-disposed to move to the rythmic pattern of the drum. It can’t be denied. It’s fascinating watching even the youngest of children dance around the second their hear the drum. It is in every one of us. In our blood, our soul.

Blog Your Way To A Signing

August 10th, 2007 by Dan

If you’re an up and coming producer looking to get your music signedl, one of the best methods out there today is to create a blog. Many emerging artists today are getting picked up by labels via their blog. A certain tall, long-haired DJ has been plowing through blogs to find new artists for his label. And it’s working. Giving your music away and creating hype is a contemporary way to working your way to the ultimate goal. And… creating a blog is free. There are number of free services that let you create and host your blog… check out blogspot.com and blogger.com Both are great.

The days of walking into a record label and begging the A&R staff to listen to your tracks has gone the way of the dinosaur. Innovation has taken over. Push your blog. Link it to every relevant source your can find. And as always, persistance is key.

The label heads are looking for you… make sure you’re out there.

Right Time, Right Place

July 24th, 2007 by Dan

There are moments in life where everything comes together to create a truly magical moment. My most recent ‘magical’ experience took place May 31st, 2007. It was the first hot sunny day in Vancouver and a bunch of us headed to the marina and hopped on my friends 34′ Sea Ray. Beautiful boat. Perfect really. We headed out towards Gambier Island (about a 45 minute ride) listening to the classic rock station. They played a perfect mix of Steve Miller, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Zepplin, Fleetwood Mac and the Police. The mood was set.

Arriving at our destination the BBQ was lit up and more friends showed up in their wake board boat. The music had progressed into deep house courtesy of Miguel Migs, his Those Things album to be exact. It worked just brilliantly as we soaked up the sun, surrounded by mountains and blue sky and good people.

A few beers later and we were in the prime of our life. At this point, the One+One album came on, the mix by the uber partnership of Nic Fanciulli and James Zabiela. By the 60 second mark the whole boat was dancing. And it pretty much stayed that way until the end. We were all unified, smiling at each other and just loving life. The track that took it to the next level was the M.AN.D.Y. remix of Push Push by Rockers Hi-Fi. I had liked that track since day one, but in this perfect place at this perfect time, it was the best song on earth. I will forever be brought back to that very moment every time I hear that track. Thanks.

Homegrown Heroes

July 20th, 2007 by Dan

It’s easy to be proud of where you live and the people you surround yourself with… lately for me, even more so. Vancouver is home to some of the hottest dance music producers around today. Konrad Black, Mathew Jonson, Circlesquare, Male Model Machine, Jay Tripwire, Tyler Lewis, Nicky Delgado and Luke Mckeehan are all Vancouverities.

Vancouver is definitely a unique city, one of only a few where you can be in the mountains in the morning (skiing, snowboarding, whatever) and then be in the ocean (boating, windsurfing, etc) in the afternoon. The moutains and the ocean are that close.

There are more Playboy Magazine centerfold models from Vancouver than any other city. Hugh Hefner is quoted as saying ‘there must be something in the water up there’. Sounds like the local producers are drinking from the same fountain.

The Value Of The Record Label

July 17th, 2007 by Dan

There are a number of dance music record labels out today that do a tremendous job of consitently releasing top shelf music. Good labels showcase a sound they know and love and each of their new releases are almost guarantee’d to be in your crate. We trust these labels to introduce us to new artists and emerging sounds. I’ve picked up a few tracks that I wasn’t totally sold on, just to find that they destroyed the dance floor when I played them that night. (I trusted that label and the label was right!)

So I guess this is a thank you to the efforts of the Record Labels, we are in an ever-changing industry and you inject a level of confidence in to the community. Your hard work is appreciated.

The Rise Of Tech House

July 13th, 2007 by Dan

Everything is cyclical, and guess who’s next in line… Tech House. I remember Tech House being my favorite through the late 90’s. I could dance to the stuff for hours on end. Then suddenly it became repetitive and my interest shifted to the “newer” sounds being offered by electro and electroclash. Today I’m feeling the pull back towards Tech House as artists like Audiofly and Mark Knight have revived the genre by utilizing the glitchy technical aspects of Tech House and combining them with the underlying groove of proper old school house and electro house bass lines. The result is an undeniably danceable rhythm worthy of head nods by even the most discerning of critics. Although Tech House has remained a constant in dance music, it will be charted and played a lot more this summer. See you on the dance floor.
